"ACLU Senior Staff: 'Article Deeply Flawed'"

Download PDF version of this letter

New York Magazine has published an inaccurate and deeply flawed article about the ACLU and its leader, Anthony Romero. The February story reflects the point of view of a very small group of disgruntled former ACLU staff and board members, and in the process creates a totally false image.

The article describes an organization and culture that bears no resemblance to the place where we are honored to work day in and day out. On these pages of Voices For the ACLU you will find both the facts as well as a reflection of the breadth and depth of support that the ACLU’s Executive Director Anthony Romero and President Nadine Strossen have earned and maintained.

As the ACLU’s senior staff, it is our responsibility to stay focused on the critical work necessary to defend civil liberties at this important time. We are saddened by this divisive distraction that comes at a time when our organization, in its 86-year history, has never been more focused on its principles. We are proud that Anthony Romero has provided the extraordinary leadership that these perilous times demand. He has both our support and our admiration.
